PORT HURON, Michigan, December 20, 2011 – On Saturday, December 10, 2011 the Visiting Nurse Association & Blue Water Hospice, Board of Directors and staff were joined by nearly 1,000 community members in celebration of the Grand Opening of the Blue Water Hospice Home.
Visiting Nurse Association and Blue Water Hospice (VNA & BWH) has been at the heart of hospice care in our community for over 25 years and has provided care for more than 8,000 patients and their families. Recognizing the growing need to help families who require hospice care for their loved ones but were unable to keep them at home, VNA & BWH professionals have created a truly unique end-of-life care home for this community.
The Blue Water Hospice Home is the first of its kind in the region. It will become a home for terminally ill patients and their families as their illness progresses and their own home is no longer an option. Situated beside a 2.5 acre pond and surrounded by 11.5 acres of garden woodlands, the home is designed and staffed to emphasize privacy, dignity, and inclusion of family members for the provision of end-of-life care.
The home is equipped to care for 12 patients in spacious private rooms, overlooking the pond and garden woodlands. Patients will also have access to a private patio, therapeutic whirlpool and massage services, individually prepared meals, and the most advanced hospice care available.
For friends and family members, there are sleeping accommodations within a loved one’s room, family rooms, a children’s playroom, kitchens to prepare meals, a chapel/reflection room for solitude or perhaps a grandchild’s wedding, a pond, walkway, and outdoor seating areas for reflection and peaceful walks.
Initially a vision of Dr. Shoudy’s, the VNA & BWH is proud to provide such an advanced option for end-of-life care in this community and look forward to taking their first patient before the New Year.
